Ukraine Invasion: Where to Find Accurate Information Online in Real Time
Speaker 1: As the world watches the unfolding crisis in Ukraine. Many of us are wondering how to stay up to date on the news while making sure we're getting accurate details and avoiding misinformation. Here's the best way to stay informed and get verified information online. In real time,
Speaker 1: I'm recording this on the morning of February 25th [00:00:30] in the us. And the situation in Ukraine is changing rapidly. Russian forces attacked the Eastern European nation in the early hours of February 24th and entered Ukrainian territory. As all these breaking new situations, it can be hard to find accurate, real time information. The best place to start is with reliable and reputable news organizations, international agencies like the New York times, BBC CNN associated press Reuters and Al Jazeera [00:01:00] all have established reporters the ground in these regions. And they have established policies in place about verifying information and footage. As these situations develop these news organizations also retweet their own reporters on the ground. So these Twitter feeds are a great place to find verified reporters who are covering the situation in real time outlet. Like the New York times, BBC and Reuters also have reliable Instagram accounts showing some of the firsthand photo journalism [00:01:30] that's coming out of Ukraine and Russia.
Speaker 1: These feeds are a really great way to get a concise overview of the situation, as well as stories of the people who are caught in the middle beyond news organizations, social media is also a good place to follow the political leaders and decision makers behind the headlines. Of course, president Biden is on Twitter as his Ukrainian president. Phlo Linsky. His account includes updates in English. If you want to follow the situation on YouTube, the white house makes all its press briefings and statements [00:02:00] from president Biden available there, including live as they happen. The United nations also has a YouTube channel with live and on-demand video. And you can watch comments from the NATO secretary general on NATO's YouTube channel for reliable English language news out of Europe. Sky news from the UK has been covering the crisis as it unfolds and German news organization dove, or also has a live stream in English with expert commentary and verified news from the ground in Ukraine.
Speaker 1: [00:02:30] Rod's YouTube channel also has news clips as well as a live view of Maden square in Keve. And with YouTube, remember there are a lot of accounts that repost clips. So keep an eye out for the verified check mark on all these chat panels to make sure you have the right account. If you're in the us and you don't have a cable subscription, you can also get news feeds from the major broadcasters on your phone, CBS, NBC, and ABC all have free ad supported apps. You can download on your phone [00:03:00] or smart TV to live stream the news while it's tempting to stay glued to social media, be responsible and avoid spreading misinformation. Before sharing, ask yourself who posted this information, are they a verified news outlet, double check the details on the account. It might unlike a news organization, but if there's no verified check mark, or if it has a low follow account, it's best to just ignore it.
Speaker 1: The same goes with videos and photos. There is a lot of misinformation [00:03:30] online, both from people cluelessly sharing images without context and other accounts that are deliberately sharing disinformation, which is online propaganda. If you're clicking on a link to a video image or gift without any details on the source or the date or location where it was taken, then proceed with caution and don't retweet or share it as news spreads fast. We all want to stay informed, but with a few careful steps, you can make sure that what you are seeing and what you [00:04:00] are sharing is accurate and reliable.
