The PlayStation VR 2 controllers revealed

Gaming Accessories
Speaker 1: Five years ago, or almost five years ago, Sony released the PlayStation VR, which was a VR console headset four year PlayStation four. That's a long time in VR land, but Sony is going to be making a brand new PS VR just for the PS five. And they've finally been releasing details on it could be arriving as soon as next year. The best thing about it. Well, sure. The headset's going to be better, but there are real VR controllers this time [00:00:30] let's break it down. Speaker 1: So one thing we do know about the PSV is that it's going, who not require a camera connected to your TV. That old PSV that has been lingering around for years uses this tracking technology. That's pretty old compared to the things you can get on headsets like the Oculus quest two or anything modern on the PC, which have tracking built into cameras on [00:01:00] your headset so that you can walk, walk around and I'd have to set up extra cameras or sensors. Sony's new PSV headset is going to have that tracking built into the headset. And it's only gonna need one cable to plug into your PS five, probably via USBC. It sounds kind of like what you can do with the Oculus quest two, when you connect to a PC with Oculus link, the other thing that's going to have is better resolution on the display, which is way overdue and it should really improve the look of things that you're, you know, that you're [00:01:30] seeing. Speaker 1: But it's what you're touching. That really matters to me. Sony's been really behind on PlayStation controllers for a while. The new ones are going to look a lot like controllers that you've seen before in VR. The OCUL quest is a great example. A lot of these VR controllers have buttons, have analog sticks have triggers, and they also have these rings here, which are for tracking so that the headset can see where it is. And also to help with recognizing where your fingers are. The Oculus quest controller [00:02:00] can do some of that. Now the PlayStation of controller has that similar ring structure, but there are some new, extra things thrown in and I'll get to those in a bit. First though, it's going to have that button layout, which is fantastic because the PlayStation move controller, which I've got right here, which is what you use for the PlayStation VR or use a dual shock for this thing is ancient. Speaker 1: This has been around PlayStation three, and as you can see, it doesn't even have any analog stick. It has buttons [00:02:30] doesn't really have haptic feedback at all and nothing like that. So the, you know, the, the function of this, this was not meant to be used with a VR headset originally. And these are, are not that fun to use. The new controllers are to be multipurpose so that you could finally play any VR game, just using those controllers, those buttons and those analog sticks mean that you potentially could even play any PS five or PS4 game on it. There are two buttons on each controller. There's [00:03:00] an analog stick on each controller. There are two triggers on each controller and there's also the split apart, uh, capture and, and option buttons. So basically all the stuff you get on a dual sense controller, speaking of dual sense, let's get to the other cool feature that the PlayStation five VR controllers are going to have really haptics and force feedback. Speaker 1: So the adaptive triggers on the dual sense on the PS five are amazing. They give us sort of a, a rumbling and a pushback so that when you're playing [00:03:30] different games, particularly the built in Astros playroom, you can feel things and you can feel like you're climbing a wall. That sort of technology does not exist on other VR, our controllers. Sony's going to build it in to its PlayStation five VR controllers. You can imagine where that would come in. If you're playing some sort of archery game where you pull back, you could feel the trigger and get a little bit of a attention there. Or if you are trying to reach out and touch something, I mean, so much of VR is about controlling those triggers and that extra vibration detail, [00:04:00] which is on the dual sense, could be great too. Going back to the Oculus quest controllers or the Oculus rift controllers. Speaker 1: These only give some very basic rumble feedback, just a buzz. And that lets you know, if you're touching something, but doesn't do much else. Sony could go a lot further with where it's haptics and feedback are going on. The PS five. The other thing we do know about the new controllers that they're going sense your fingers a little bit. Now this isn't gonna be full hand tracking. Like you can get, um, maybe if you're using cameras on [00:04:30] a, on some VR headsets and it's not going to be, I don't think quite like the valve index controllers, which have a really wild mechanism, uh, for your fingers where it can sense they're all moving. Speaker 1: It seems like what it's doing is similar to the Oculus quest controller. In that you can tell whether your finger is on the buttons or lifted off the buttons, why that matters? Well, if you can tell whether it's on the button or off the button, you [00:05:00] can do a lot of things pointing or you could do a fist or you could, you know, make it look like in VR, you're doing this or this or whatever and do gestures. So it kind of feels like you're reaching out and doing stuff. Now how far Sony pushes into that finger tracking, whether it's something that's like the Oculus quest or whether it's something that goes even further, we have no idea, but the good news is that finally Sony has those VR controllers, which I feel like have held back where the PlayStation VR has been able to [00:05:30] go. Speaker 1: A lot of the PlayStation VR games are fantastic and they, they really covered a lot of the gamut of PC and quest games. And a lot of what's out there, but you have to pick, or you can use a dual shock, four controller. Are you going to use those old PlayStation move controllers? Sony's new solution is going to mean that you don't even have to think about that and not having to worry about where you're placed in front of your TV or in your room means it should be a lot easier to get in and get out in these games and feel like you're being immersed. Now we [00:06:00] have no idea what the price of this is, and we don't know when it's coming out, but I would think that 20, 22 would at least be a really good time to reveal that information or sooner because there are already a lot of VR headsets out there. Speaker 1: And VR is really gaining traction. Whether you like the idea of Facebook and the Oculus quest two, it is a fantastic standalone VR headset. And it seems to only be getting better. Now I love if Sony made a standalone Oculus quest type device too. I mean, they made the [00:06:30] PlayStation Vita. So why not? Maybe that'll come in the future. I hope, but in the meantime it sounds like the play station five is going to get a really fantastic gaming accessory that could unleash all of the graphics power in the PS five in all sorts of new, interesting ways. That's what we know so far. And that's why I'm looking forward to the controllers on this PS five PSV or whatever it's called.
