2020 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500: A star on a drag strip and road course

The 2020 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 marks a rebirth of sorts for the top model. In addition to being a straight line bullet, it can also confidently romp around a race track.

Powering the new GT500 is a 5.2-liter supercharged V8 engine making 760 horsepower and and 625 pound-feet of torque.

Routing power to the rear wheels is a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission.

Ford says the top Shelby model can hit 60 mph in 3.3 seconds and cover the quarter-mile in 10.7 seconds.

The GT500's top speed is electronically limited to 180 mph. 

Fuel economy is a GT500 weak point returning an EPA-estimated 12 miles per gallon in the city and 18 mpg on the highway.

To improved track capabilities further, an optional Carbon Fiber Track Package adds improved aero, carbon fiber wheels wrapped with Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tires and adjustable strut top mounts.

On the inside, the Track Package adds Recaro seats and carbon fiber dash trim.

An active exhaust system comes standard on the GT500 with Quiet, Normal, Sport and Track modes.

The 2020 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 begins at $74,095, including $1,195 for destination and $2,600 gas guzzler tax.
