Security Update 2006-007 Special Report: Palm synchronization difficulties

Some users are reporting Palm HotSync issues after applying Security Update 2006-007.

One reader writes: "After the update I had a 'Shared Library Error' with Palm HotSync Manager! The HotSync icon was missing from the Palm (4.2.1) folder so I reinstalled the Palm software, but still had the error. Then ran DiskWarrior and the error was cleared. Using Missing Sync to connect by USB to a Samsung i500."

MacFixIt reader Bob adds:

"Since installing Security Update 2006-007, I haven't been able to synch my Palm Treo 650 with my Powerbook. The error is a crash while handling the task list; everything else seems OK. I can't synchronize it, force the Palm's contents to the Mac, or force the Mac contents to the Palm. So I'm stuck."

Dick Wareham writes: "I also experienced the same issue with my Palm 505 to intel MacBook Pro. Just hangs and fails to make connection. Worked just fine before I did the upgrade. Re installed Missing Sync Software still no change awaiting response from Mark Space. Never had a problem with their software previously.

John adds: "After applying the latest Apple Security update to my Imac 24" Intel computer, whenever I sync my Treo 700p to my Imac using Now-Up-to-Date version 5.3.1, it wipes out the Calendar contents on my computer. Not on the Treo 700p Calendar, just on the calendar on my computer."

We contacted Eric Ullman of Mark/Space (the creators of the MIssing Sync), who said that while the problem is not being experienced in-house, there are some potential fixes at hand.

"The m505 owner may just need to reset their handheld. If that doesn't help, then they should follow the instructions in the User's Guide and our support knowledgebase to see if the device is even showing up on USB.

"For the user with the tasks syncing problem, if he or she is experiencing a crash of The Missing Sync application, then it would help if we could look at the crash report. If it's not an actual crash, but the Tasks conduit is generating an error, then it's likely a problem with the data, and we would want to take a look at the Sync History/Log. This information can be sent to our support staff by using the form on our website."
