DriveSavers comments on DVD-RAM directory corruption bug

Regarding our previous report of a DVD-RAM cartridge bug causing directory corruption, Chris Bross (of DriveSavers) writes: "We have seen this problem in a data recovery situation very recently. We have been able to successfully recover the data from the above mentioned problem. The problem is related to the driver and directory not being flushed properly when the cartridge is dismounted. This problem is not new in regards to Macs and removable media. I can recall many cases in the past with other removable media and poorly written drivers in the early days of SyQuest and Bernoulli cartridges where this could happen. In some of those cases, a user would use command-E to eject the media instead of command-Y or manually dragging the icon to the trash. The next cartridge is then inserted and takes the name (and directory) of the previously mounted cartridge, badly corrupting it. All of these situations can cause different levels of directory corruption, most of which are recoverable as long as the user notices the problem and does not write to the cartridge/drive in any way."
