Does Godzilla vs. Kong have a post-credits scene? Kind of
This monster matchup streams May 21, but you don't have to wait until after the credits.
Every blockbuster needs a post-credits scene, apparently, and 2021's smash hit Godzilla vs. Kong is no exception. Except the scene isn't where you might expect to find it.
Godzilla vs. Kong is streaming from May 21 and on Blu-ray and DVD from June 15, before returning to HBO Max for free at some point. Director Adam Wingard told SyFy Wire there are two reasons why there isn't a scene during the credits. First and foremost is that by the time you get to the closing titles you've already seen the scene planned for the credits.
"We actually shot a post-credits scene but then we ended up using it in the movie," said Wingard, though he didn't actually reveal which scene it was. The scene was "one of those things where we shot it as one idea, and we got into editorial and realized 'we need a moment at a certain point in the movie,' [so] we ended up taking that footage and using it in a different context in the movie and it really, really worked for us."
And the second reason? The unknown future of the movie Monsterverse. Generally, post-credits scenes tantalize viewers with a hint of an eventual sequel or follow-up film, and right now there are no specific plans for another film in the series. So not having a post-credits scene is the correct decision, Wingard said.
"I think it's 100 percent the right choice," he said, "because this is the crossroads for the Monsterverse."
Given that Godzilla vs. Kong was a huge hit, does that mean a new lease of life for these venerable monsters?
Godzilla vs. Kong will be available to stream from May 21, while the 4K and Blu-ray disc will be released June 15. Like all current Warner Bros. blockbusters, the film was available for a 1-month release on streaming service Max, and will return to the HBO streaming service for no extra fee at some point in the future.
